Instructor of Medicine, Transplantation Research Center, Renal Division, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School
After 5 years surgical residency in Japan, Dr. Ueno received a board from the Japan Surgical Society in 1999. He started his Ph.D. program from 2001 in . The main theme was `organ preservation` and he received his Ph.D. in 2005. In 2003, he moved to Boston to start another postdoctoral fellowship in the Transplantation Unit, Surgery, Massachusetts General Hospital under the supervision of Dr. Auchincloss, as well as in the Transplantation Research Center , Renal Division, Brigham and Women’s Hospital under the supervision of Dr. Sayegh. He has performed about 1,200 cardiac txs. in mice for several projects. In 2007, he returned to the Critical Care Medicine of Tokyo Medical University, Tokyo, . He focused on patients with hypercytokinemia such as sepsis, acute abdomen, peritonitis, transplantation (liver, kidney), and MOF. He has made over 10 presentations including being an invited speaker as one of the pioneer of PMX-DHP adsorbing mediators, cytokines and endotoxin. Therefore, he is the only Japanese co-author of its first systematic review published in Critical Care 2007 and serves as reviewer of a couple of medical journals and has received awards.
Recently Dr. Ueno returned to TRC, Renal Division, Brigham and Women’s Hospital and has started several projects with his colleagues again. Also he is attending operations at MGH once a week.
Awards:
2002 - 13th Annual Meeting of Japan Society for Blood Purification in Critical Care 2004 - 6th Japanese Society for Abdominal Emergency Medicine 2005 - American Transplant Congress, Poster of distinction
Dr. Ueno served as
2005 Reviewer (Artificial Organs)
2005 Reviewer (Therapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis)
Takuya's research interests
Dr. Ueno’s research interests focused on investigation of studying the mechanisms of allograft rejection and transplantation tolerance using cardiac transplantation models. Recently Dr. Ueno and his colleagues have shown new insights of unknown functions of TIM-1 in regulating alloimmune responses. Therefore, to evaluate the role of the pathway between TIM-1 and its ligand TIM-4 is our future direction. Also he is interested in pathways in the B7:CD28 family. Dr. Ueno and his colleagues have defined the inhibitory functions of the novel costimulatory molecule B7-H3 in alloimmune responses. This project is now preparing for submission. Furthermore, Dr. Ueno is interested in chemokines; possible therapeutic targets in transplantation. He is examining several projects with his colleagues.

Part II: Research, Teaching, and Clinical Contributions:
Narrative report
Clinical/Research: After 5yrs residency of general surgery, I received a board from Japan Surgical Society as an authorized surgeon and started my research fellowship at Kitasato University Graduate School of Medical Science from 2001. My research interest focused on organ preservation in liver transplantation. We have demonstrated (-3 degrees) nonfrozen conditions have sufficient function to sustain the life of rats after orthotopic liver transplantation and also succeeded in the model of orthotopic liver transplantation using liver grafts from12hrs brain death donors.
From 2003, I moved to Boston, MA and investigated to understand mechanisms of T cell recognition of alloantigen in Massachusetts General Hospital under the supervision of Dr. Auchincloss. At the TRC, I was able to delineate the role of specific T cell costimulatory activation pathways in graft rejection and tolerance using several different molecules such as TIM-1, B7-H3 as well as some of the negative T cell costimulatory pathways. While in Japan, I also gain experience working at Critical Care Medicine and Surgical ICU of Tokyo Medical University, Tokyo, JAPAN where I focused on patients with hypercytokinemia such as sepsis. We have shown the beneficial effects of polymyxin B-immobilized fiber column in septic patients.
